Weighing his options, Crum lifted the iron device and carried it toward Ray, hoping it would continue to hold against the rapid fire of machine guns.

Digging his way free of the drums, Ray peeked over the pile of metal. A barrage of bullets riddled the area, but it was clear they didn’t know exactly where he was. Seeing Crum, cowering behind what appeared to be a makeshift shield, Ray drew his gun and took aim at the SUV. In an attempt to calm himself, he exhaled and squeezed the trigger. His bullet hit the post between the front and back seats. He was still shaken. His body trembled. He needed to breathe. Only then would he be able to hit his target.

Hearing the machine guns slow, Crum knew at least one of them was reloading. This was his chance. Setting the bottom edge of his wall in the dirt, he drew his Desert Eagle. Leaning around the barrier, Crum popped off four shots. He ducked back, just as another volley riddled his position. Something caught his eye as he returned to cover. The grenade Ray had been given was lying in the dirt.
